San Angelo ISD High School Students Tour Angelo State University During Shannon Health Science Symposium

San Angelo ISD is proud to partner with Shannon Health, the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Corporation, Howard College, and Angelo State University to offer the second annual exclusive four-part symposium series, the Shannon Health Science Symposium Series, to SAISD high school students following a health sciences pathway and interest.

On Tuesday, November 28, students were hosted by Angelo State University to tour the Archer School of Health and Human Services and see first hand the teaching techniques used if they choose Angelo State as their post-secondary institution. Students broke out into groups and rotated through four rotations to gain insight into what a ASU health science student would experience during their studies. Rotation included visiting the Sim and Skills lab, seeing the Anatomage Table in action, learning about the admissions process, and practicing their bandaging skills.

“The partnership between SAISD, Shannon Health, and ASU is extremely valuable,” said SAISD Director of Career and Technical Education Roxanne Fentress. “It provides exposure for students to witness the educational and employment opportunities available to them right here in San Angelo, while at the same time providing ASU and Shannon Health access to a pool of students interested in health sciences and potential employees.”

The Shannon Health Science Symposium Series will take place over the course of the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year. During the series, students will have an opportunity to discover the health science programs available at Angelo State University and Howard College and learn more about the many departments within Shannon’s facilities here in San Angelo. At the conclusion of the symposium series, students who participated will have the opportunity to apply for the Margaret Shannon Educational Assistance Program, which provides financial and educational support for those students pursuing post-secondary healthcare careers such as nursing, radiology technician, surgical technician, physical therapy, and many more. The Margaret Shannon Scholarship is a full tuition paid educational assistance program.

The Shannon Health Science Symposium goal is to provide SAISD students insight and visualization into the pathways they can pursue in any health science field. Join SAISD in thanking our partners who helped make the Shannon Health Science Symposium Series possible, supporting opportunities for our health science pathway students to prepare for their future, whatever that future may be.
